There are generally at least six competitions each year either open themed or set subject themes. An Image Of The Year Competition is held in November / December each year, in conjunction with the Photographer Of The Year Award.

This year there are seven competitions - four Open Themed & four Set Subject Competitions [one competition overlaps] Open competitions will be held in March [together with a set subject] [judge: Robyn Kinsela]; May [judge: Len Brown], August [judge: TBA] & November[judge: TBA].

We also have four Set Subject Themed competitions this year. In all Set Subjects, members are encouraged to look beyond the obvious interpretation of the theme & use their imagination to create their images. That said, the resultant images must obviously reflect the Set Subject.
- February, Body Parts [judge: Ray Finneran]; This can be parts of any body, not necessarily human - animals, insects, car, truck, etc.
- March, Photo Reflecting Painting [judge: Robyn Kinsela]; Photographs that "imitate" famous paintings. Images can be a clever interpretation or quite similar to the original. The original work should be acknowledged on the rear of the photograph.
- June, Abstract [judge: David Wills]; dramatic shapes and colors, new perspectives on common objects, intersections of lines and textures, illusive subjects with a purpose, striking patterns on moving water, reflections of light and illumination.
- September, The Brown Box Selection [judge: George Hofstetters] 5 subjects in a box - Photographs can be made of each individual subject or of all five.

And of course there will be our Image Of The Year competition in December. In keeping with previous year's IOTY competition when we have had very experienced professional photographers as judges, our judge this year is Len Metcalf.

Competition images may be entered in any of the following categories: large colour prints, large monochrome prints, small prints [either colour or monochrome] & projected images - we have dispensed with the freestyle / creative category due to lack of entries; the old slides category has been incorporated into the projected images category. Members only may enter images into competition & may enter a total of five images in any one category or spread over all categories. Visitors may, if they wish, have any work assessed by the judge but will not receive any merit awards. Images must have been created within two years of the date of the competition - the focus is on what members are doing now rather than what they have done in the past.

Judges, in assessing the images, may award either a Distinction [5 points] or a Credit [3 points]. Points are accumulated over the year's competitions towards the Photographer Of The Year Award. Images receiving merit awards may not be re-entered in any future competitions even if reworked. These images may however be entered in the Image Of The Year competition provided the image has not been altered in any way.

All prints in the Large Colour, Large Monochrome & Small Print categories must be mounted [& preferably matted] on cardboard or foam core board. Unmounted prints or framed prints will not be accepted into competition. Good presentation is a fundamental part of showing your work - if you are proud of your work you should try to present it well.

The image authors name & the title of the image must be shown on the reverse side of the image.
